When should you consult your orthodontist about treatment?
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends orthodontic screening by age 7.
Why should your child get an early orthodontic check-up?
1. Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.
2. While your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a future problem that an orthodontist can detect.
3. Even if your child's bite appears fine at present, it is still recommended to have an orthodontist monitor growth and development.
4. Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment time at a later age shorter and may prevent the need for future extractions.
5. An orthodontist can sometimes use a growth spurt to their advantage. Waiting until growth is complete can limit the type of orthodontic treatment possible.
6. Early treatment or recommendations to treatment may give your orthodontist the chance to:
- Primary (baby) tooth extractions
- Break a thumb or finger habit
- Guide jaw growth forward or backward
- Lower the risk of traumas to protruded front teeth
- Correct harmful oral habits
- Improve appearance
- Guide permanent teeth into a more favourable position
- Improve the way lips meet (speech habits)
7. Through early orthodontic screening, you’ll be giving your child the best opportunity for a healthy, beautiful smile that will be a lifetime benefit.
