You, your orthodontist and your family dentist are now a team. You all want the same thing - for you to have a healthy smile with beautiful, white, straight teeth. Your orthodontist will straigthen your teeth and your dentist will help keep them clean and check for problems periodically. But you're the one who has to to take care of your teeth every single day during treatment to keep them clean, healthy and white. That means closely following instructions your orthodontist and orthodontic staff provide.
Plaque is a problem
Plaque is a sticky, colourless film that collects on the teeth. It is composed of bacteria, food and saliva. If plaque and trapped food are left on and around your braces, they can cause swollen gums, bad breath, cavities and permanent marks on the teeth.
Brushing Tips
- Brushing thoroughly at least 4 times a day: after every meal and before you go to bed.
- If you can't get to a toothbrush right away after a meal, be sure to rinse your mouth well with water until you can brush. That way you'll clear your mouth of large food particles. A travel toothbrush is provided in your package. This is a great way to make brushing more convenient when you're at school or work.
- At least once a day brush your teeth and braces thoroughly until they are spotlessly clean, and then floss. This takes a little extra time, so you may want to do this at night time before you go to bed.
- Our hygienists and assistants will provide you with all the knowledge you need to promote a beautiful smile when you're done.
- Feel free to ask our staff about electric toothbrushes, flossing materials etc. We are available to answer any questions you may have!
